2024 CFB Week 0
Overview:
Guys, I’m not going to lie, this week has been absolutely brutal for me. I’m stuck in Florida as a W-2er, while my parents and all other true Seminoles alike traveled across the pond to watch the Noles whoop some Yellow Jacket ass in Week 0 in Ireland – frankly, I am disgusted with myself.
However, as a true Seminole myself, I will not roll over and pout in my own pool of sorrow – I will rally, and I will give my heart, soul, and liver to the Seminoles on Saturday – think Tim Tebow a la UF 2008 after the Ole Miss game
Confession:
I have a confession to make, and something to get off my chest.
Originally, when Mike Norvell decided to bring in DJU as our QB for the season, I was a hater, and loser. A detractor. An antagonist. A downright pessimist.
His play on the field didn't 'wow' me, and I just didn't think he'd be a great fit in our scheme, and just the city of Tallahassee in general (it takes a certain type of sick fuck to thrive here).
However, it was in early July that Big Uce started to sway my opinion of him
He posted on Instagram, and presumably has a NIL deal, with Circle K, particularly the one on Pensacola St -- if you know anything about the city of Tallahassee, this is hallowed ground -- underage alcohol, infinite fake Chinese vapes, and ungodly boner pills (I recommend the Strong Back, personally)-- this is the mecca for all of the above
However, my skepticism around DJU wasn't all wiped away there -- in practice videos you could see him regularly being the last one out of the QB room -- obviously, this made me question his leadership, and his overall connection with the team.
It has been said he is not a vocal guy, and moreso "leads by example" -- although I'd prefer my QB to be more of a vocal leader, I can't knock him on leading by example.
However, today changed my mind for certain on DJU.
As the team travels to Dublin, DJ, who also has a NIL deal with Beats by Dre, secured new headphones for all of his teammates.
Now honestly, getting them the headphones is nice and all, but it's really just a stunt -- DJ looks good, and Beats gets some exposure. Win, Win.
However, I was focused on the reactions of his teammates. You can see below for yourself, but to me, it seems like they want to go play for this guy. It's pretty clear that he is the undisputed leader, and his teammates love him -- this speaks volumes to me
So with all that being said, DJ, I apologize. Go be great, Big Uce.
Time to hop off my soapbox, there’s still money to be made in this small Week 0 frame, and I’ve found some spots where I think we can do just that.
Hop in, let’s go for a ride.
The Picks:
FSU vs GA Tech 1H u27.5 -105 (5u)
This is just a common sense play here, to me. Both teams arrived in Ireland Thursday morning at about 10am Ireland time, which is 5am body time – I don’t know about you, but jet lag has hit me like a train in the past. I guess the idea is that they’ll have a day to acclimate, but to me, that’s just not enough time. Expect it to take at least a quarter for both of these teams to wake up.
On top of that, rain is in the forecast, and FSU is obviously installing a new QB, so it would be natural to take a couple drives to start clicking.
It seems square but don’t overthink it. Next.
SMU vs Nevada -23.5 -135 (3u)
Obviously not gonna put too much into a matchup like this, but it seems like SMU might be a little underrated in this spot.
Nevada, after B2B 2-10 seasons, brings in Jeff Choate as new HC, and their roster just straight up blows. Any QB battle involving Chubba Purdy (the kid who mortally fucked his shoulder doing a kegstand at a Pike frat party) is not a good one.
For SMU, they bring back Preston Stone, who is a legitimate top 10 QB in the country, and their offense returns almost all producers. On D, their backers are some of the best in the ACC, and they filled that line with transfers. They should be solid on that side.
SMU is gonna be a big trap game for the Noles in about a month, and I expect the Stangs to cruise in this one – buy it down a point because I’m a pussy.
Lawrance Toafili o37.5 Rushing Yards vs GA Tech -114 (5u)
I got this on an offshore book as soon as it came out because, man oh man did those analytical line-making nerds fuck this one up.
Toa is going to be used in an entirely different capacity this season, and multiple insiders have said he could be the MVP of the offense this season.
He literally could hit this line on 1 carry, so if he just gets 6+ carries, I’ll feel extremely comfortable.
This Noles OL has more experience opening holes than Johnny Sins, so they should pave the way for hefty gains regularly against this GA Tech D.
Jalen Brown o30.5 Rec Yards vs GA Tech -114 (3u)
Similar to the above pick, I have some confidence in this because Jalen can hit this prop in one play.
The guy is an absolute burner (10.65 100m in HS), and honestly, these Georgia Tech nerds just don’t have the athleticism to match this speed.
Add in the fact that Nole reporters have been glazing JB for the past couple weeks, I expect good things from him.
Overall, excited to watch my Noles open it up in Week 0, and really looking forward to seeing Mike Norvell with a new QB – think it will tell us a lot about his coaching and scheme.
To my fellow Noles over in Dublin for the game, drink a pint for me, and I’ll double you back on the home turf.
Godspeed and Go Noles.
Spo Out.
